46 in IIT, topper in their midst, Bhilai celebrates
Shashank Shekhar Dwivedi has turned into a star overnight. Son of a Bhillai Steel Plant (BSP) engineer, Shashank expected only an honourable rank in the IIT merit list. So he was quite taken by surprise when he made it to the top slot.
The small BSP township was abuzz with the news as soon as the results were announced yesterday and streams of visitors have been pouring in at the boy’s Sector 9 residence.
‘‘The sky is the limit for everyone, yet I find myself lucky to be number one,’’ says Shashank. He gives credit for his success to the encouragement he received from his parents and teachers.
His father, P.K. Dwivedi, an assistant general manager with the BSP, says his son has been studious right from his prep school days but adds that his making it to the top rank came as a pleasant surprise.
‘‘He has brought glory to the town. We are all proud of him and wish him good luck,’’ says his mother.
Shashank has a long list of achievements which include a Scholar Badge, Blazer and Gold Medal, a National Talent Search Examination scholarship and cash award at the national-level Science and Mathematics Olympiad. He also won the Chemistry Olympiad, 2002, and was among the five students finally selected for the International Physics Olympiad.
‘‘Keep your targets clear, work in a planned way and success will be yours,’’ is Shashank’s advice for IIT-aspirants.
Children from the small township have once again done their parents proud with 46 of them making it to the IIT-JEE list of sucessful candidates this year.
Shashank joins the ranks of Navin Buddhiraja, student of the Senior Secondary School, Sector 10, who topped the all-India IIT merit list in 1984.
